Next semester, we are planning to repeat a project from last year where students are tasked to create a virus or bacteria. They have to decide its transmission process, its symptoms, how it adapts, and its degree of lethality.

This sounds pretty exciting. It makes me want to be in this class. Which grade will be working on it? What are your thoughts on gamifying this project?

hi! It’s for Year 5 (9-10 y.o). It was first done last year but I was in Y6 previously so it will be my fist time teaching it but science is my favored subject to teach.

We have previously let them explore this using the app (Plague Inc.) but after seeing a presentation from out ICT teacher about using coding, would be cool to see if there is a way to combine coding with the creation of their pathogens. At some point in the project, students have to create graphs of transmission rates and then a timeline from infection to death.

This sounds really cool. I’m wondering: what are you hoping students will learn from doing this project? And how could the end of the product have a final twist where students think about how they use their learning for good? E.g. could students end with a presentation on how societies could resist and deal with such a pathogen?

I think that’d be a great purpose! Originally it was just to present on it, but I would like to make it more meaningful of what could we do if we it were real and how we could build resistance to it. I was also thinking to have the top two presentations of each of the 5 Y5 classes then present to the whole year group as a way to showcase their work not just to our classmates. Unfortunately, our school does not allow parents in for an event like this so we cannot have the students showcasing to them in an event evening.
