Focus (Khim): STEM integration of Math and Robotics

I am working with Mr Evgeny to create Robotics challenges to integrate mathematics with problem-solving through the use of technology beyond the math classroom.

Thanks to the STEM/IT team, we were able to make my dream activity come to life through proper coding. Since it is mainly a math lessons, the coding in the background helps me to direct the students’ focus on the Math.

I set a personal goal to create ONE of such activity/task per grade level, and add more in subsequent years to form a collection.

With the gold standard example, how can we help them connect these engagements to solving real-world issues or at least connecting them to the real-world context?

and important to think about why we want to connect it to real-world examples – often it’s because it makes the learning more meaningful and relevant, and also gives the opportunity for students to have an impact that they can tell a story about (and great for them to reflect and think of what they’ve achieved).

Hmmm, that is an interesting point that you are making. Asking them to think about why we want to connect it to real-world examples instead of what real-world connections there could be may bring totally different perspective and level of understanding. I guess it depends on the purpose of a question, i.e. what we want them to think about and what we want to reveal. Thank you for both of your comments. Definitely some food for thought here🤔

Inspired by tonight’s session, I think I might do a debrief of the robotics activity with a Connect-Extend-Challenge reflection that includes this “how does this help to engage with real-world problem?”

And then, thinking ahead, how could you help students actually engage with a real world problem? (if it’s even possible!)

I love this idea. Have you got a chance to run the activity? Curious to hear back how it went.
