Focus (Heather Exum): Boat Building Project

  • Focus (Heather Exum): Boat Building Project

I have several PBL initiatives but I joined to help make sure that I am doing these to the best of my ability. The boat building for grade 7s seems very appropriate. Students design boat models in design and then test them scientifically in science then build a large version that they pilot and race in the pool.

Students build model boats and test them scientifically. Then, based on the analysis in groups, they build a large-scale model and race them in the pool. While this is a good IDU with Design I would like to do an even better job of scaffolding the skills and I wonder if there is a way to tie this to UNSG.

I am wondering is this a career-read kind of IDU/PBL? What do you wish them to be able to learn, to do, to understand during this boat building project?

They are supposed to understand buoyancy and how designing the boats can use science when doing the planning. They are also supposed to see how the scientific method is useful in the evaluation stage of the design process and how the scientific process is not just for science class.

I’ve realized that the boat unit cannot be easily modified (I have another co-teacher) so I have decided to focus on my space exploration unit. Some suggestions from small group vex continuum and exploring space through robotics and possibly a what is a new technology that needs to be developed for space exploration.

For the space unit 1. what are you hoping students will be able to do as a result of it and then what do they need to learn to do it? And then 2. what is an authentic product they could work on?

        I could see something like:

        1. Students will be able to conceptualise new technologies that will enhance space exploration – in order to do this they will need to learn about: current technologies for space exploration; the conditions of space that need to be considered in designing new technologies etc.
        2. They could do a pitch on their idea, including thinking about how they can convince people to spend the money (i.e. what’s the value that exploring space brings). They could pretend their doing this to something like NASA (or the space agency in your country?) or even better if you can get a space “expert” in to watch their presentations!

Just some brainstorming for you! Super interesting topic!
