Speaking Strategies
Session 3 is all about STRATEGIES!
We will discuss and share resources in our next session (January 17) but feel free to start the discussion now by commenting below. We have previously started a padlet as our strategy collection method, this could be something we continue to develop and will help with organization. Add your resources here!
Below are some questions to guide your thinking and discussion of speaking strategies we can use in all our classrooms.
- What speaking strategies do you find most effective in promoting oral communication and active participation among students in your classroom?
- How do you scaffold speaking activities to support students in expressing their ideas? What techniques or approaches do you use to help students organize their thoughts before speaking?
- What strategies do you employ to create a supportive and inclusive speaking environment in your classroom? How do you encourage all students to participate and feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions?
- How do you facilitate collaborative speaking tasks or discussions among students? What strategies or structures do you use to ensure equal participation and active engagement from all students?
- What role does the use of visual aids, such as images or props, play in supporting students’ speaking skills? How do you incorporate visual scaffolds to enhance speaking skills?
- How do you provide constructive feedback to students to help them improve their speaking skills? What strategies or scaffolds do you use to help students reflect on their performance and set goals for improvement?
- How do you differentiate speaking instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners in your classroom? What strategies or scaffolds do you use to support English language learners or students with speech difficulties?
- What digital tools or resources do you utilize to enhance speaking skills? How do these technologies support students’ oral communication skills and provide additional scaffolding?
- How do you assess students’ speaking skills and progress? What types of formative and summative assessments do you employ to evaluate their fluency, vocabulary usage, ability to express ideas, and overall speaking proficiency?
You can share your thoughts and resources below as a comment in preparation for our January Session! By adding to our padlet, we can ‘bookmark’ our strategy bank for use now and beyond!
