Listening Strategies
Session 3 is all about STRATEGIES!
We will discuss and share resources in our next session (January 17) but feel free to start the discussion now by commenting below. We have previously started a padlet as our strategy collection method, this could be something we continue to develop and will help with organization. Add your resources here!
Below are some questions to guide your thinking and discussion of listening strategies we can use in all our classrooms.
- What listening strategies do you find most effective in promoting active listening and comprehension among students in your classroom?
- How do you scaffold listening activities to support students in understanding spoken language and extracting key information? What techniques or approaches do you use to help students focus their attention while listening?
- What strategies or scaffolds do you employ to help students develop their listening skills, such as identifying main ideas, making inferences, or understanding implied meaning in spoken texts?
- In what ways do you incorporate authentic listening materials, such as podcasts or videos, into your classroom? How do you scaffold students’ comprehension of these materials?
- What role does explicit instruction of listening strategies play in supporting students’ listening proficiency? How do you teach students to use strategies like predicting, summarizing, or clarifying while listening?
- How do you create a supportive and interactive listening environment in your classroom? What strategies or structures do you use to encourage students to actively engage with the speaker and ask clarifying questions?
- How do you differentiate listening instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners in your classroom? What strategies or scaffolds do you use to support English language learners or students with auditory processing difficulties?
- What digital tools or resources do you utilize to enhance listening instruction? How do these technologies support students’ listening skills and provide additional scaffolding?
- How do you assess students’ listening skills and progress? What types of formative and summative assessments do you employ to evaluate their comprehension, ability to extract information, and overall listening proficiency?
You can share your thoughts and resources below as a comment in preparation for our January Session! By adding to our padlet, we can ‘bookmark’ our strategy bank for use now and beyond!
